Protein Studies on the Human Vitreous Body
INVESTIGATIONS of the vitreous body are beset with numerous technical difficulties. Its large water content and the instability of its structure make it difficult to obtain unchanged vitreous body in large amounts. Through the slit lamp and in fixed histological preparations (Lauber, 1936; Baurmann, 1926; Comberg, 1924; Duke-Elder, 1930), the human vitreous body appears as a structured mass. In...

متن کاملStudies on the Structure of the Vitreous Body*
Only a few studies have been reported on the biochemistry of the vitreous body in the developing eye. Bernbridge and Pirie (1) determined the total hexosamine and the total nitrogen content of the filtered vitreous body of rabbits after birth and found that during the first three weeks there was a decrease in both the nitrogen and the hexosamine concentration. Schweer and Siidhof (2) confirmed ...
متن کاملStudies on the structure of the vitreous body. V. Soluble protein content.
Since iLlijrner (l), the proteins of the vitreous body have been generally classified as residual and soluble proteins. The former includes those elements of the gel which can be collected as a residue after filtration or as a sediment after high speed centrifugation (more than 50,000 X g). The latter refers to the proteins in the liquid vitreous, the viscous fluid remaining after removal of th...
متن کاملA Study on the Structural Protein of the Vitreous Body (vitrosin)
A method is described for the isolation of a structural protein of the vitreous body, which has been named vitrosin. The analyses show that vitrosin is a viscous, thixotropic, fibrous protein. Electron micrographs reveal that vitrosin particles are long fibrils, averaging 250 A in width. The isoelectric point was found to be around pH 5.5 and the shrinkage temperature 60 degrees C. Vitrosin is ...
